What is Gopher

Gopher Invented at the University of Minnesota in 1993 just before the Web, gopher was a widely successful method of making menus of material available over the Internet. Gopher was designed to be much easier to use than FTP, while still using a text-only interface. Internet gopher is a distributed document search and retrieval system. It takes a request for information and then scans the Internet for it. The protocol and software follows a client server model and permits users to browse, search and retrieve documents residing on multiple distributed server machines.

There are still thousands of Gopher Servers on the Internet
