Usenet and Telnet



Usenet. It is worldwide system of discussion groups, which allows us to participate in discussion with people from all over world. Each discussion group is centered on a particular topic i.e. jokes, recipes, news, computers, mathematics etc. It has more than 13000 discussion groups. Usenet is free to access i.e. we have to pay just for Internet access. Usenet discussion groups are referred as ‘NEWSGROUP’. With each newsgroup, each ones contribution are called as ‘articles’ or ‘posting’. 
A news group is like a notice board. This is accessible to all the members belonging to the group.
An internet Relay Chat(IRC) is a party line over which you can have interesting conversations with other internet users.

Telnet. The telnet service allows an Internet user to log on to another computer somewhere on the Internet. That is, a user can execute the telnet command on his/her local computer to start login session on a remote computer. This action is also called “remote login”.

Common uses of Telnet.
·                                 Using the computing power of the remote computer. The local computer may be an ordinary personal computer and the remote computer may be a powerful super computer.
·                                 Using software on the remote computer. This software that the user wants to use may no be available on the local computer.
