Difference between Internet and Intranet


Internet. The meaning of Internet is taken from internetwork, which means network of networks. The Internet is a world wide interconnected system of thousands of lac’s of computer network. Each computer on network can communicate and exchange information on any network using standard rules known as protocol. The protocols used for communicating through Internet are known as TCP/IP protocol. The feature of Internet is the ability of different computer system to cooperate in solving computation program. The Internet can be comparable two great communication systems i.e. “postal system or telephone system”. Both of these consist of smaller parts, which are connected to larger organizations, but great advantage of Internet is it is more flexible and lot faster.

Intranet. An intranet is a local area network (LAN) used internally in an organization The same concepts and technologies of the Internet such as clients and servers running on the Internet protocol suite are used to build an intranet. HTTP and other internet protocols are commonly used as well, especially FTP and email.

An intranet is a network that is contained within an enterprise. It may consist of many interlinked local area networks and also use leased-lines in the wide-area network. The main purpose of an intranet is usually to share company information and computing resources among employees. An intranet can also be used to facilitate working in groups and for teleconferences.
